World Humanitarian Day is observed every year on August 19 to honor humanitarian workers and raise awareness about the urgent needs of people affected by crises worldwide. It was first commemorated in 2009 by the United Nations General Assembly, following the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad that killed 22 aid workers, including UN Special Representative Sérgio Vieira de Mello.
The day serves as a global call to action, urging governments, organizations, and citizens to protect humanitarian workers, uphold international humanitarian law, and fund life-saving aid. In recent years, attacks on aid workers have reached record levels, with over 380 killed in 2024 alone.
World Humanitarian Day campaigns, such as #ActForHumanity, encourage public pressure on leaders to end impunity, safeguard civilians, and ensure aid can reach those in need. Activities include fundraising, volunteerism, and sharing stories of frontline workers.
This observance reminds the world that humanitarian aid is a fundamental human right, and that protecting those who deliver it is essential to preserving global humanity.
