Human Trafficking Training | i-5 Freedom Network | United States
On May 30th, the Zonta Club of Riverside had the privilege of hosting Stacey from the i-5 Freedom Network for an impactful presentation on human trafficking and the Hotel for Heroes initiative. Stacey’s talk was both eye-opening and deeply moving, shedding light on the hidden realities of trafficking that often occur in plain sight, including within the hospitality industry.
She shared how the i-5 Freedom Network works tirelessly to disrupt the cycle of exploitation through education, advocacy, and community partnerships. One of the most inspiring parts of her presentation was the Hotel for Heroes program, which trains hotel staff to recognize the signs of trafficking and respond safely and effectively. Stacey emphasized that these everyday heroes—housekeepers, front desk clerks, and maintenance workers—can be the first line of defense in saving lives.
Her message resonated strongly with our members, reminding us that awareness is the first step toward action. By equipping communities with knowledge and tools, we can create safer spaces and protect the vulnerable. The evening left us motivated to support i-5 Freedom Network’s mission and to continue Zonta’s commitment to advocating for women and girls everywhere.

The i-5 Freedom Network’s Hotel Can Be Heroes initiative equips the hospitality industry to play a frontline role in combating human trafficking. Hotels are often unwitting intersections for trafficking activity, making staff awareness and readiness critical. This program provides targeted training that teaches hotel employees how to recognize red flags—such as unusual guest behavior, inconsistent stories, or signs of coercion—and, most importantly, how to report concerns safely and effectively.
The training removes uncertainty by clarifying what to report, to whom, and how to act without endangering guests, staff, or victims. It emphasizes protecting the dignity and safety of all involved while safeguarding the hotel’s reputation. By partnering with hotel managers, the i-5 Freedom Network integrates anti-trafficking protocols into daily operations, ensuring that vigilance becomes part of the workplace culture.
Beyond awareness, the program fosters a sense of empowerment among hospitality workers, reframing them as potential “heroes” whose attentiveness can save lives. Through this initiative, hotels transform from passive venues into active allies in the fight against exploitation—proving that with the right knowledge and tools, everyday professionals can make a profound difference in protecting vulnerable individuals and disrupting trafficking networks.
