Amelia Earhart landed at Newark Municipal Airport on August 28, 1932 after completing the first solo nonstop transcontinental flight by a woman, flying her Lockheed Vega 5B from Los Angeles to Newark in 19 hours, 5 minutes. A small but enthusiastic crowd of about 150 people gathered on the tarmac, rushing past police guards to surround her plane and celebrate her historic achievement.
